There is no concrete evidence that proves that Mario was named after Mario Segale. Neither Nintendo, nor Mario Segale has ever confirmed this rumor. The rumor was started in a book called “Game Over: How Nintendo Zapped an American Industry, Captured Your Dollars, and Enslaved Your Children” and even though the author interviewed Shigeru Miyamoto, he spelled his name wrong throughout the entire thing book, and never asked him about the origin of Mario’s name. So, that’s hardly fact. Odds are, it’s a co-incidence. Personally, I don’t believe that this real estate mogul personally showed up to the NOA offices demanding money. You have people to do that for you when you’re the boss.
