Hot Brakes?

Junior Johnson was a pioneer in his own right during his run in NASCAR. He discovered drafting as a strategy to reduce drag drastically, for one.
Another innovation was brought on by his friend in the aerospace industry, who wanted him to try out a new material. Amazed by its light weight and strength and because of the rules of NASCAR, he was using it in the late 60’s before anyone else. However NASCAR banned its use when they saw his brake discs glowing red from use, thinking it would cause a tire fire.
What material?
