Why so Sad?

This is a deep sea fish that may now be endangered due to deep sea trawling. Their flesh is only a little denser than that of water to survive the immense pressure. But this also reduces it to little more than a fugly gelatinous mass when on sea level.

However it has become an ambassador of sorts for endangered animals which are overlooked for those which are more cuter when it became the mascot for the Ugly Animal Preservation Society.

However something happened this month causing it to be so grumpy? What was it and what is this fish called
