This X effect is …in effect every time a literally wooden or even metallic character(think HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey) “displays” a range of emotions. It was discovered by a Russian film editor X in the 1920’s. He made a film showing an actor,  together with a plate of soup, a dead woman, and a woman on a recliner. Audiences perceived and even praised the almost imperceptible expression of hunger, grief, or lust shown by the actor when in reality the same clip of the actor’s face was used again and again.
